dRMM

About Us

dRMM, a London based international studio of architects and designers, was founded by Alex de Rijke, Philip Marsh and Sadie Morgan in 1995. The practice takes pride in carrying out work that is innovative, high quality and socially useful. We have a track record of creating extraordinary architecture within the standard constraints of the construction industry. Our radical projects are led by site, client needs, concept and construction, rather than formulaic or style-based decisions.

All of dRMM’s completed projects have received critical acclaim and professional recognition. Our first new building project, No. one Centaur Street, won eight awards including ‘RIBA London Building of the Year’ and was described by Jonathan Glancey in the Guardian as “a minor masterpiece”. Building Design awarded dRMM ‘Public Housing Architect of the Year 2006’ for Wansey Street Housing; the globally unique Sliding House received RIBA and Grand Design Awards; and Clapham Manor Primary School has received RIBA, Civic Trust, and Mayor’s of London Planning Awards.

The Kingsdale School transformation, our first large scale construction, is widely regarded as a technical and architectural tour de force. The school features a ‘variable skin’ ETFE light-controlling roof, the world’s first and largest at time of construction, and includes three innovative engineered timber buildings. This experimental project set new standards in education architecture, and has positioned dRMM as design leaders in the field of sustainability, particularly in relation to pioneering cross-laminated timber construction.

Current education projects include Exeter Royal Academy for Deaf Education and Birmingham’s primary and secondary school stock. Housing work in development includes residential and commercial units for Kings Cross Central and sustainable tower housing in western Norway in collaboration with Helen & Hard Architects. dRMM are working alongside Raphael Viñoly and Ian Simpson Architects on the Battersea Power Station Regeneration, and are completing a key element of the Stratford City North residential masterplan for the 2012 Olympics.

In addition to the large projects listed, dRMM have successfully completed a variety of smaller projects in the cultural sector, including contributions to major architectural exhibitions in the UK, Italy, Norway and Brasil, and art gallery design work in Aberystwyth, Milton Keynes and Oxford.

dRMM are also constructing a floating studio, de Ark, to house our own design team in a purpose built studio as ‘cargo’ on board a 62m Dutch barge. De Ark will be a mobile 3D manifesto of dRMM’s pioneering work in inspirational timber construction. We will be based in London, but able to go anywhere.
