As an architect at dRMM, James is passionate about the intersection between education and architecture. James works on a variety of education, residential and masterplanning projects in the office, with a focus on cross-laminated timber construction. Since he joined in 2017, he has been mainly working on Wintringham Primary Academy in Cambridgeshire – a new build CLT primary school that aspires to synthesise the extension of learning spaces beyond the conventional classroom.
James grew up in Hong Kong and graduated from the London School of Economics in Geography, before obtaining the AA Diploma from the Architectural Association in London. His years in academia allowed him to investigate the social and cultural implications of vernacular architecture in post-conflict countries. In 2009, he founded a charity that designs, builds and runs village schools in Takeo, Cambodia and has been an active volunteer ever since. When he is not reading or writing about architecture, he is a keen hiker, an amateur rock-climber and bonsai lover.
