The northern outfall sewer under construction in the late C19

The northern outfall sewer, part of Joseph Bazalgette’s original London Sewer System, conceived after the ‘big stink’ of the late C19, runs across the north of the site. Horizontal and vertical exclusion zones reduced the developable area of the site. Despite this, the overall design was still able to maximise the site area by providing a density of 256 units per hectare.
